Large scale housing estates of the 1960s and 1970s have a bad reputation. Their industrial design and their functional, standardized character are criticized as well as the high degree of atomization, the anonymity of social relationships and their often isolated location in the city outskirts. Which possibilities and concepts exist to make these residential buildings attractive for its older and newer residents, but also in terms of neighborhood and urban development? Florian Urban and Charles Landry, who have presented much acclaimed contributions on this question in recent years, in their lectures develop perspectives for creative further development of large-scale housing. Anita Aigner, Marie Glaser and Kurt Hofstetter comment on these lectures from a sociological and urban planning perspective and with regard to the topic “New Social Housing” at the IBA Vienna.
